Welcome to The Blackdown Hills Hedge Association.

Devon Bank and Ditch

The Association comprises an enthusiastic group of people working and living on the Blackdown Hills who are dedicated to preserving the craft of hedgelaying and other related skills in the Blackdown Hills National Landscape Area (“AONB” as was).

The aim of the Association is to do their utmost to preserve the rural skills associated with hedgerows.

To this end, one of our main activities during the winter season is running courses teaching the Devon style of hedgelaying. The BHHA course is rightly celebrated as being one of the most "hands-on" courses available. We also work on a very low trainee to instructor ratio – typically one experienced tutor for each pair of students who will be laying their own section of hedge.

For more details and a schedule of next season's courses see the hedgelaying course page.

“Skills of the Hills”

Each year in Spring, the BHHA puts on its own hedgelaying competition: the “Skills of the Hills”. If you would like to come and see Devon hedgelaying in action do come along. Spectators are welcome and admission is free.
